Carlo Vialu, PT, MBA served as Director of Physical Therapy for the NYC Department of Education, where he oversaw a program with over 700 PTs working in more than 1,500 schools. He is project manager of research on normative data for five mobility tests for school-aged children, & co-founder of www.SeekFreaks.com.

 

Cathy Ripmaster, MSPT is a school-based physical therapist at Lincoln Developmental Center, a center-based school servicing students who have complex disabilities within Kent County, Michigan between the ages of five to 26 years. Cathy is a certified Mobility Opportunities Via Education (MOVE™) International Trainer since 2001. She has provided numerous MOVE Basic Provider’s trainings to empower other therapists and her colleagues to promote students’ movement throughout their school day.

 

Karen Tartick, PT has been practicing for over 30 years in a variety of settings including outpatient orthopedics, early intervention, acute care, NICU, and school-based physical therapy. Karen has served as a member of the Autism subcommittee of the School Based Physical Therapy Special Interest Group, and co-authored the Autism Spectrum Disorder Guide for parents on the Move ForwardPT website, the APTA’s consumer webpage. Karen is an APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor, and a mentor for school-based portion of the pediatric residency program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she serves as an adjunct faculty member.

 

Carly Matichack Stock, PT, DPT has had the pleasure of working in the realm of pediatrics, including school-based, multi-disciplinary clinics, research, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently practices in the Harford County Public Schools in Bel Air, Maryland. Carly was a faculty mentor in the pediatric residency program at Kennedy Krieger Institute responsible for the school-based and muscular dystrophy components. Carly is passionate about forming meaningful relationships with children and families she serves and offering creative evidence-informed therapy services.

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:

      1. Identify at least 3 tests and measures for children with moderate to severe physical disabilities
      2. Determine the rationale for the use of at least 2 tests and measures for children with moderate to severe physical disabilities
      3. Apply the results of at least 2 tests and measures as they pertain to functions in the school, home and community on given case scenarios
      4. Determine 3 benefits of using gait trainers for children with complex disabilities (Gross Motor Functional Classification Levels of IV or V)
      5. Identify the 2 critical points of control for proper positioning in a gait trainer
      6. Apply 3 strategies for problem-solving pelvic and head alignment on a given case study of a child with complex disabilities who is using a gait trainer
      7. Distinguish children who may benefit from early introduction of powered mobility from those who may require powered mobility at a later time.
      8. Identify 3 types or features of powered mobility devices and their benefits.
      9. Apply 3 strategies for successful integration of powered mobility in the school routines and activities of a student in a given case scenario.
      10. Identify the role of related services in decision-making and implementation of safe transportation for students
      11. Determine 3 features of current safety standards for wheelchair transportation on buses
      12. Apply 3 strategies when making decisions for safe transportation of a student with wheeled mobility in a given case scenario
