Join Apply EBP’s Experts Series, and learn from 4 experts in the field of pediatric practice. This course is aimed at helping you select the right tools for the right child, and plan interventions that have been shown to work! Carly will discuss assessment tools, interventions, and contraindications for children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Alyssa will then present the evidence supporting the use of various standardized tests and interventions for children with Down syndrome. Patti will return to equip you with her Top 5 evidence-informed intervention strategies for teaching motor skills in children with Cerebral Palsy. Finally, Erika will discuss the nuts and bolts of one of the most effective intervention tools for clients on the autism spectrum…video modeling! You will see various examples of using video modeling for attaining motor and behavior goals.

 

You will leave the course with your Therapy Toolbox full of tools and strategies that you can use the very next day to help children with these health conditions achieve their goals!

Alyssa LaForme Fiss, PT, PhD is a Professor at Texas Woman’s University in Dallas, Texas. Her research focuses on examining and identifying effective service delivery models to improve activity and participation in children and youth with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. She has published widely and has presented internationally.

 

Patti Sharp, OTD, OTR/L, BCP is a certified CO-OP Instructor, and OT at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). She co-leads the Developmental Coordination Disorder Community of Practice at CCHMC. Patti is excited to share her passion for evidence-based practices with her therapy colleagues.

 

Erika Buckhouse Hanson, PT has worked in the schools for 18 years. She is a clinical instructor, and mentor to therapists and special education teachers. She co-wrote North Dakota’s first-ever Guidelines for Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Settings.

 

Carly Matichak Stock, PT, DPT has had the pleasure of working in the realm of pediatrics, including school-based, multi-disciplinary clinics, research, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently practices in the Harford County Public Schools in Bel Air, Maryland. Carly was a faculty mentor in the pediatric residency program at Kennedy Krieger Institute responsible for the school-based and muscular dystrophy components.

At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

      1. Identify at least 2 signs of child muscle weakness that require a referral or discussion with a physician​
      2. Select 2 specific assessments tools to utilize with individuals with DMD in early stages of disease​
      3. Identify 2 areas of participation or occupation where therapy interventions can have a positive impact for a client with DMD
      4. Identify 2 assessment tools that are appropriate for children with Down Syndrome
      5. Determine the application of motor growth curves and probabilities in intervention planning for children with DS
      6. Select 2 intervention strategies that have been shown to promote performance in children with Down Syndrome
      7. Identify 3 primary symptoms of cerebral palsy that impact your pediatric client’s motor performance
      8. Determine 3 features of effective, evidence-supported interventions for children with cerebral palsy
      9. Apply 3 strategies to facilitate achievement of functional goals for children with cerebral palsy in the school, home, or community environment on a given case study
      10. Select 2 skills that can be targeted with video modeling to help a pediatric client participate in ADLs, social participation, play and leisure or other meaningful activities
      11. Identify 3 strategies in creating a video to utilize for video modeling
      12. Determine 2 strategies in implementing video modeling for a pediatric client

Registrants may cancel up to 14 days prior to the course for a refund minus a $75 administration fee. There is no cancellation less than 14 days prior to the course; you can find a substitute or use your registration to attend a future Apply EBP course. There is no cancellation or substitution after you have received any course material; you can use your registration to attend a future presentation of the same course.
