Karen Tartick, PT has been practicing for over 30 years in a variety of settings including outpatient orthopedics, early intervention, acute care, NICU, and school-based physical therapy. She currently practices in the Durham Public Schools in Durham, NC. Karen has served as a member of the Autism subcommittee of the School Based Physical Therapy Special Interest Group, and co-authored the Autism Spectrum Disorder Guide for parents on the Move ForwardPT website, the APTA’s consumer webpage. Karen is an APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor, and a mentor for school-based portion of the pediatric residency program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she serves as an adjunct faculty member.

 

Jennifer Wissinger, PT, DPT serves early intervention and preschool children in Columbus, Ohio. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy with over 15 years of experience practicing in public school districts (preschool through high school), county board of developmental disability programs for adults, home health care, and early intervention. She has served as an instructor in the pediatric curriculum in the physical therapy program at Ohio State University, a mentor in a pediatric residency program, and in leadership roles in the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy. She enjoys engaging learners of all levels to use evidence and to work collaboratively in teams to serve children and their families.

 

Amy M. Schlessman, PT, DPT, DHS is a therapist working for almost 20 years primarily in the school-based setting, promoting physical activity embedded into academics, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the use of technology in therapy, while closely working with educators, administrators, therapists, and parents. She is an assistant professor in the PT program at University of Findlay. She has conducted numerous dynamic presentations for teachers, parents and therapists regionally and nationally. She also published an activity book, “Recycle Bin Boogie: Move and Learn with Recyclables,” which combines movement and learning with common, household recyclables.

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:

    1. Identify 2 student goals that can be addressed via embedded services
    2. Identify 2 class location, routine or activity where embedding PT services would be appropriate on a given case study
    3. Determine 2 embedded PT interventions on a given case study
    4. Identify the purpose of using “time of day” (routines-based) approach in assessment of children with disabilities.
    5. Select two examples of matching the client’s desired outcome with a “time of day” intervention
    6. Determine two strategies for interventions that promote the child’s participation within a natural routine, in a given case study
    7. Identify 2 benefits of movement across the International Classification of Function (ICF) model
    8. Identify 2 academic benefits to promoting movement throughout the school day.
    9. Determine 3 creative physical activities that can be integrated into academic concepts in the classroom, using common materials
    10. Identify 2 benefits of the use of assistive technology to improve participation in the educational environment
    11. Determine appropriate assistive technology that promotes participation in meaningful school activities with peers, on a given case scenario
    12. Identify 2 strategies to support implementation for the use of assistive technology in the schools
