Carlo Vialu, PT, MBA served as Director of Physical Therapy for the NYC Department of Education, where he oversaw a program with over 700 PTs working in more than 1,500 schools. He is project manager of research on normative data for five mobility tests for school-aged children, & co-founder of www.SeekFreaks.com.

 

Sandra Saavedra, MS, PT, PhD is a pediatric researcher and Associate Professor at the University of Hartford. She has more than 25 years of clinical experience as a pediatric PT, and is a national leader in researching, teaching and applying segmental principles to treatment of posture impairments in infants all the way to older children, from those with mild to severe disabilities. She played a major role in the refinement and validation of the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo). She works with various clinical and school-based settings to apply SATCo principles to assessment, interventions, selection of adaptive equipment and measuring outcomes.

 

Karen Tartick, PT has been practicing for over 30 years in a variety of settings including outpatient orthopedics, early intervention, acute care, NICU, and school-based physical therapy. She currently practices in the Durham Public Schools in Durham, NC. Karen has served as a member of the Autism subcommittee of the School Based Physical Therapy Special Interest Group, and co-authored the Autism Spectrum Disorder Guide for parents on the Move ForwardPT website, the APTA’s consumer webpage. Karen is an APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor, and a mentor for school-based portion of the pediatric residency program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she serves as an adjunct faculty member.

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:

    1. Identify at least 3 tests and measures for children with moderate to severe physical disabilities
    2. Determine the rationale for the use of at least 2 tests and measures for children with moderate to severe physical disabilities
    3. Interpret the results of at least 2 tests and measures as they pertain to functions in the school, home and community on given case scenarios
    4. Identify 2 examples of how using the SATCo can promote a child’s function and participation in meaningful activities
    5. Determine 3 important testing techniques when using the SATCo
    6. Select the correct SATCo score and level of trunk control based on a completed SATCo score form
    7. Identify three important positioning principles to improve upright control in a child with postural dysfunction.
    8. Identify how children use “closed kinetic chain” strategies to support their posture.
    9. Determine the starting level of external support to promote a child’s meaningful activities such as education, mealtime or others, on a given case scenario with SATCo scores.
    10. Identify 2 benefits of the use of assistive technology to improve participation in the educational environment
    11. Determine appropriate assistive technology that promotes participation in meaningful school activities with peers, on a given case scenario
    12. Identify 2 strategies to support implementation for the use of assistive technology in the schools

Post-tests: 10-item multiple choice. 70% correct answers required to receive a certificate for each webinar.
