New Jersey PTs and PTA CEU Requirements
The following excerpts were retrieved from the NEW JERSEY ADMINISTRATIVE CODE TITLE 13, LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY, CHAPTER 39A, STATE BOARD OF PHYSICAL THERAPY on 8/17/2026. Please note that we are providing this for your information only. It is the responsibility of the licensee to know and keep up to date with their state’s regulations.
- N.J.A.C. 13:39A-9.2 (a): “…each applicant for biennial license renewal as a licensed physical therapist and as a licensed physical therapist assistant shall complete during the preceding biennial period a minimum of 30 credits of continuing education, which shall include four credits of jurisprudence and professional ethics.”
- N.J.A.C. 13:39A-9.3 (d): “The Board shall grant a maximum of 10 of the mandatory 30 continuing education and competency credits required in a biennial renewal period of licensed physical therapists and licensed physical therapist assistants from any or all of the following: 1. Successful completion of videotape, audiotape, computer media, Internet, journal, or correspondence courses, programs or seminars: a maximum of 10 credits per course, program or seminar. The course, program or seminar shall include an examination at its end. Credit for correspondence and other individual study courses or programs shall be provided only in the renewal period in which the course is completed with a successful final examination;”

Are Apply EBP courses approved by APTA for CEUs?
Unlike AOTA and ASHA, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) does not approve continuing education courses. PT and PTA continuing education approval requirements vary by state. For New Jersey PT and PTAs, courses are approved by the NJ Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. You can see courses that are currently approved above through 1/31/2028, the current approval period.
How do I know whether a course is approved for New Jersey PT or PTA CEUs?

Do I receive a certificate after completing a course?
Yes. Participants who successfully complete the course requirements receive a certificate of completion or attendance which includes course approvals for various states. For PT and PTA CEU courses approved in New Jersey, your certificate will also include the number of CE hours it is approved for, the approval number, and approval period. Requirements may include attending or viewing the course, completing attendance checks or assessments, and submitting a course evaluation.
