Swamped by handwriting referrals? All Write Already! is a one-day interactive workshop that uses the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework-3 (OTPF-3) for handwriting referrals, the most common referral to school-based occupational therapy. Participants will learn a two-pronged approach to this common referral problem: 1) a systems approach to intervention, and 2) an individual approach to evaluation and intervention.

A systems approach takes into account the school as client, and the use of a general education handwriting curriculum delivered with fidelity, along with determination of educational disability in this area of handwriting within the mandate of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  Effective advocacy strategies as a school-based systems intervention will also be highlighted.

An individual approach framed as top-down, occupation-focused evaluation that includes ecological assessment in context will be discussed to determine the different factors that may affect performance. Participants will learn how to calculate legibility and connect individual assessment data to legibility literature.  Participants are encouraged to bring handwriting samples to the workshop for analysis.

All Write Already! will provide information regarding evidence-based utility of common standardized assessments of handwriting, as well as assessments of underlying performance skills that are assumed to support handwriting. Evidence-based practices for handwriting instructions and interventions will be covered, as well as current research on pencil grasps, pencil grippers, other writing tools. Appropriate outcome measures for handwriting progress will be recommended. Attendees will leave the course with a practical toolkit and action plan to use the very next day.
